Music Education
When and where did music education get its start in schools?
Im writing a research paper for my english class about the elimination of fine arts from schools and need help finding the history of music in schools. About what time did music education in schools start and where like the state and or name of school where it first started.
You probably won’t find a definite answer for which state it started in, but it was common practice, at private schools, in ancient Athens. Plato taught harmonic theory.
In England and Wales, music is part of the mandatory National Curriculum up to age 14, so it won’t be eliminated without a change in the law. You could compare that to other states.
If you are interested in North America, the Garland encylopedia says (Vol. 3 Ellen Koskoff ‘Learning’ page 275 – I found it on Amazon.com) :
“Private academies in the United States offered children instruction on violin, cello, piano and other orchestral instruments, but public school music was first offered in Boston in the late 1830s.”
By the way, music is one of the arts, but not, in my opinions, one of the ‘fine’ arts, which are usually visual.
